Khalil stood on the stoop in his usual spot. He had been out there all day and was ready to call it a night. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed Silas's number again. The call went straight to voicemail. He had planned on telling Silas about the visitor that had stopped by earlier that day, but Silas hadn't answered any of his calls since he left.
“A’ight, fam,” Khalil said to Wayne. “I'm out. I got a couple of things to handle in the morning, but I'll be out here when I'm done.”
Wayne nodded and Khalil walked off, hopping into a squatter car that Silas bought for him when he moved to the east coast. The car wasn't much to brag about, and it definitely wasn’t anything he was used to driving. Silas told him to tone it down because they were moving to an unfamiliar city; the less attention the better. The car served its purpose. He got to wherever he needed to go and back, but back in ATL, he was pushing something more fitting for a man. He worked and saved to buy an all-black Jeep with the rims to match. Khalil was never the type to wait for anyone to give him a handout, but the way he was being handled made him feel less than a man. He left behind friends and family to chase paper he barely saw. Silas told him that this was going to be a power move, but Khalil had yet to reap any of the benefits. He really felt he had been doing better down south and contemplated going back.
Khalil pulled up to his studio apartment in the heart of north Philadelphia just as his phone began to vibrate. He looked at the bright screen.
“Oh, now this nigga wants to call back,” he said when he saw Silas’s name. Khalil tapped the speaker button. “Yo.”
“What’chu mean yo?” Silas snapped. “You’re supposed to be on your job. Where you at? Money ain’t going to make itself.”
“What?” Khalil responded.
“I’m out here; Wayne is out here, but you ain’t,” Silas rumbled. “Something’s wrong with that picture.”
Khalil looked at his phone in disbelief that Silas was speaking to him in such a disrespectful tongue. “Yo, Silas, chill the fuck out with all that,” Khalil stated with discontentment.
He had no idea why Silas was coming off the way he did, but whatever the reason, Khalil didn’t feel the need for him to be talked down to. Silas knew better than anyone that Khalil was far from soft, and had it been any other nigga talking to him that way, Khalil would have made sure they weren’t able to say another word.
“Naw, fam, you know how it goes,” Silas responded through the muffled phone speaker. “You need to hit me up whenever you leave your post.”
“I’ve been hitting you up all day,” Khalil defended. “I’ll be at my spot if you need to get at me.” Khalil hung up the phone, unwilling to listen to Silas’s rampage.
